Earthquake

Violent earthquakes are comparatively rare in Australia but they do happen and there are some steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.

Earthquakes usually give no warning, often only a few seconds.

• Show all family members how to turn off power and gas and water.
• Have a fire extinguisher handy.
• During the quake seek cover under a sturdy piece of furniture. Hold onto the furniture for balance.
• Doorways offer little protection and doors could slam into you.
• Stay away from windows, glass doors and unsecured heavy objects.
• If in bed stay there and cover yourself with bedding.
• Don't run outside if you are inside.
• Following the quake wear protective shoes, check for damage to services and be aware of aftershocks.
