Hail

Hail damage is more common in NSW and QLD and while deaths are rare, injuries are common and the damage to cars, homes, commercial and Government property can run to hundreds of millions of dollars for one event.
Damage usually starts to occur when the hail reaches the size of a golf ball or about 3 centimetres in diameter.
Hail can be found in thunderstorm events and can often be identified by a greenish tinge to the clouds.
Early warning of a hail storm is possible with radar so it is a good idea to listen to news reports when a storm is nearby.
Unfortunately hail events are very unpredictable and forecasting is not always accurate.

Steps to take:

• All family members should stay indoors until the hail has passed.
• If the storm has not started, park your car under cover.
• If you are in your car when the storm strikes, seek shelter under a bridge or another solid structure.
• After the storm, check for damage in the garden and around the home. If damage is visible, the roof may have sustained damage.
• Check your car for dents or broken windows.
• Carefully remove any broken glass from the car to prevent injury to yourself.
• Cover the car to prevent any further damage from water.
• If possible cover any holes in the roof or skylights to prevent further water entry.
• If you are unable to secure the roof yourself, call the State Emergency Services and your insurance company.
