Learner drivers don’t have to be listed on the parent’s AAMI comprehensive car insurance policy to be covered under an AAMI comprehensive car insurance policy. As long as they are accompanied and supervised by a full licence holder a learner driver will be covered under the parent's policy in the event they have an accident. There is no need to ring up AAMI and put them on the policy, they are covered automatically.

The premium is the amount you pay us to cover your car and is shown on your policy schedule. When we calculate your risk premium we might take into account some or all of our premium factors depending on the policy purchased, and licenced history.  Some of those premium factors could include; age of driver, gender of driver, type of car, age of car, address where the car is kept overnight, what the car is used for, licence history, etc.

An excess is the amount that you must first contribute towards each claim you make on your Policy unless we tell you otherwise. Some excesses, like the standard excess, will apply whenever you make a claim, unless you can provide us the name and address of the responsible party, or their vehicle’s registration number.

Pro-rata is the amount of remaining premium on an insurance policy. For example, if you complete the Skilled Drivers Course 7 months after your policy has started, a 10% discount will be applied to the remaining 5 months of your insurance policy, and we will refund you the saving.

If you drive your parent’s car and you’re listed as a driver on their AAMI policy, the 10% Skilled Driver Discount will be applied to their policy. If you and your parent's have separate policies than only the Skilled Driver participant (you) will be eligible for the 10% discount.

As long as the policy is under the Skilled Driver participant’s name it doesn’t matter who pays the premium, the Skilled Driver discount of 10% will be applied.

Whilst there is not a direct link between coming off your P’s and a reduced premium, your premium usually will decrease with age.  There are many factors that affect a car insurance premium and your age is certainly a significant factor, however as you get older, your insurance premium usually does decrease.

Only CTP (Compulsory Third Party) insurance is associated with car registration. In NSW, in order to register your car with the Road Traffic Authority (RTA) you need to get your green slip or CTP insurance first. If you are planning to register your car in Queensland, you will need to purchase a Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Certificate. In all other states in Australia, CTP insurance is automatically applied to the cost of registering your car.
