Creating Timeless Romance with Jennifer Tran
How Jennifer Tran’s floral creations are a vital part of the AAMI Victoria Derby Day race book.
Each year, the cover of the AAMI Victoria Derby Day race book is eagerly anticipated. This year is no different, with the theme for 2017 AAMI Victoria Derby Day being Timeless Romance.
When it came to creating the image that would grace the front cover of the AAMI Victoria Derby Day race book, Jennifer Tran’s floral creations were an important part of the puzzle.
Jennifer is a Sydney-based creative who makes intricate paper flowers that are so life-like, they’re often mistaken for the real thing. Her work has been featured in magazines around the world including the National Sculpture Magazine of China, Martha Stewart Living in the USA, and The Design Files here in Australia.
The creative concept behind ‘Timeless Romance’ was shot on the Mornington Peninsula earlier this year, on a cold blustery day. The shoot was styled to capture an image that immediately spoke to the notion of romance. Including Jennifer’s flowers into the scene helped create a whimsy and beauty that were vital elements of the concept.
With whipping long grass adding to the beauty of the scene, a majestical horse in the background and a timeless beauty in the foreground, the flowers added their own special touch of dream-like fantasy to the day. “The whole scene is quite romantic,” explains Jennifer. The larger-than-life paper flowers dotted the field to create pops of colour that were playful and romantic.
“For this year’s installation I’m inspired by surrealism. I’ve created giant flowers, bigger than life. It’s so surreal, something that doesn’t exist in nature. At the same time, they look so realistic, it blurs the boundary between fantasy and realism,” says Jennifer.
Jennifer’s work will be featured on the much-awaited AAMI Victoria Derby Day race book, which is available on race day at Flemington.
