AAMI urges Geelong flash-flood and storm-affected customers to contact insurer as soon as possible


AAMI is urging residents impacted by the severe storms and flash flooding in Geelong yesterday to contact them as soon as possible for assistance.

AAMI spokesperson, Angela Wilkinson said: “With more rain on the way, customers should contact us as soon as they can so we can get the claims process underway.

“While flood waters are still affecting some streets in the Geelong region, leaving some residents without access to their homes, we can still start the claims process for them now and provide immediate assistance. 

 “We want customers to know that the sooner they lodge their claims, the sooner we can lend a hand by securing their home and starting repairs. 

“We can also provide assistance with urgent needs such as emergency accommodation, food and clothing. 

“Our top priority at this time is the safety of our customers, so we urge residents to follow the direction of authorities and to exercise caution as they return to their properties and flood waters begin to recede,” Ms Wilkinson said.

AAMI’s flood and storm clean up tips:

  • If you have evacuated your home, ensure electricity and gas supplies are switched off before re-entering.
  • If you see or suspect asbestos do not touch it and notify emergency authorities, such as the SES or the fire service.
  • Do not attempt to use any electrical equipment, such as fridges, televisions or toasters that have been in contact with water. 
  • Do your best to dry out your home by keeping it as ventilated as possible to help prevent the quick build up of mould. 
  • Get wet contents out of the house and make a list of damaged items. Take photos and make a note of brand names/model numbers if possible as this will help us provide you with equivalent replacements. 
  • Throw away food that has been in contact with storm water or which has not been refrigerated if you’ve lost power. Take pictures of the fridge and its contents if possible. You may be eligible to claim on food spoilage.
  • Dispose of your carpet if it has been severely damaged by floodwaters as keeping it can cause further damage to home and health risks. Make sure you keep a small piece to show our assessors or photograph the carpet back where the make and brand is stamped.
