Motorcycle Insurance FAQs

When you’re getting a quote, we’ll use the information you’ve given us to work out a range of values you can insure your bike for. We base this on Glass’s industry valuation guide. You can then choose how much you want to insure your bike for within this range. The amount you choose is the maximum amount we’ll pay for loss or damage.

We insure all sorts of motorbikes (including cruiser, sport, touring, and naked bikes), scooters, and mopeds.

Our only exceptions are:

• Motorcycles built before 1976
• Select models of privately imported bikes
• Motorised bicycles (pedal powered)
• Racing bikes
• Any motorcycle used for business, hire or paid riding tuition

Unregistered motorcycles that don’t need to be registered by law, like dirt, trail and quad bikes, can be covered under ‘Fire, Theft & Third Party Property Damage cover’ but only for loss or damage to the motorcycle caused by fire and theft (including attempted theft). Importantly, for unregistered motorcycles there is NO cover under your policy for any legal liability arising from loss or damage or injury, when caused by or arising from the use of the motorcycle.

Yes, they are. Granted they have a valid learner’s licence and are listed as a rider on your policy, they’re all covered.

If they’re riding at the time of an incident, an extra excess will apply, in addition to any other regular excess. See the PDS for full details.

If your motorcycle already has hail damage at the time of insuring it with AAMI, you may be eligible for our Third Party Property Damage Insurance. You can’t get Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance or Third Party Fire & Theft Insurance. 

Many modifications won’t affect your ability to be eligible for AAMI’s motorcycle insurance, including alternations to cylinder heads, camshafts and cam gears. However, if your motorbike has the following nonstandard accessories and modifications, we won’t be able to insure it:

• Custom or specialised paint that is aftermarket and has been repainted aftermarket, including Harlequin, Chameleon, Candy, Xirallic, Pearlescent, and Prisma finish
• Nitro of hydrogen fuel
• Petrol turbo of petrol supercharger
• Modified or sub frame

Just ensure the amount you cover your motorcycle for is enough to also include the value of all the insured accessories and modifications.
