What is the AAMI Safe Driver App™
The AAMI Safe Driver App™ is a free smartphone application that helps drivers become safer drivers.
How does the app work?
The app uses GPS to record your journeys. Based on algorithms derived from extensive experience with driving data, the app will automatically analyse your data to provide you with a driving score and feedback relating to your journeys. To do this the app considers factors such as the length of trips, speed, acceleration, braking, and phone use whilst driving. The higher the score you get AAMI considers you a safer driver.
What are the benefits of using the app?
There are many benefits. These include:
- Recording and viewing recent journeys
- Reviewing your journey and driver feedback
- Understanding how you drive and how you can become a safer driver
- Seeing how you rank against friends, family and against other users
- Linking your AAMI comprehensive car policy and earning benefits based on your score
What will the app tell me about my journey?
The journey notification will tell you a lot about your trips. These include; a map of your journey, the time taken, kilometres driven, your start and finish time, as well as a high level score of your journey broken down into speed, braking and phone use.
On the map we will also drop ‘pins’ to indicate where you’ve recorded a speeding or hard braking event. Please note: to generate your actual driving score we use more information than just these few events, however we include them in your journey notification to provide a guide and highlight areas for improvement.
Do I have to register with the app?
You don't have to register with the app however doing so provides additional functionality such as access to leaderboards and additional badges. Also, if you intend to claim any benefits under an AAMI comprehensive car policy or to get a quote through the app, you will need to be identified and link your existing AAMI comprehensive car policy.
Can I deregister?
Yes. At any time you can deregister from the app by visiting the 'Settings' page in the menu. By doing this any links or benefits applied to your policy will be removed upon renewing.
Why do I need a username?
Your username acts as your account credentials so you can log in and out and is also used to represent you on the leaderboard.
Can I use my iPad or Tablet?
The app has been designed for use on smartphone handsets only. You can check whether our app is compatible with your phone by downloading it from Google Play or the iPhone App Store.
What happens if I lose, change or upgrade my phone?
Everything is saved to your profile when the app automatically uploads your journey records so nothing is lost. In this case you can download the AAMI Safe Driver App™ on your new phone and log in with the same username and password you've already created (if you are registered). This will then load your profile and journeys.
What if I don’t use or forget to switch on the app?
We've got you covered. The app has a built in Autostart function which recognises that you are on the go and begins recording the journey.
What if I forget to stop recording a journey?
The app will automatically stop recording after about 5 minutes of not detecting what it thinks is a journey, and will trim the journey to when your vehicle stopped.
How does the app know that I am the driver of the vehicle and not the passenger?
Initially the app will ask you to confirm that you are the driver in order to build a picture of your driving behaviour. Once we have recorded 300km we have enough data to confidently determine when you are the driver of subsequent journeys. Occasionally the app may ask you to confirm that some recorded journeys are yours if they do not fit your usual driving pattern.
What is the benefit?
The current applicable benefit for safe driving is the AAMI Roadside Assist benefit. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will be able to access this benefit, free for a period of insurance.
How do I receive the free benefit?
To be eligible for the free benefit you need to have:
- Driven at least 300km in the last 180days
- Driven at least 10 journeys in the last 180days
- A score of at least 60 in the last 180days or a score of at least 60 at the time of taking out a new policy.
- Be a current or new AAMI customer
- Have a current AAMI comprehensive car policy

The benefit can only be applied at new business or at renewal.
Linking your policy to the app
What policies can be linked to the app?
If I have a joint policy with AAMI can both policy holders link the policy on the app?
Yes. As long as you are listed as a policy holder you can link your profile to the policy. In the case where there are two or more listed policy holders all policy holders can link their profile to the one policy.
Can I delink my policy?
Score and Ranking
How is my driving score calculated?
The calculation uses a number of parameters such as speeding, braking, accelerating, journey length and phone use to analyse your driving and provide you with a score ranging from 0 to 100. The higher the score, the safer a driver we think you are.
The app rewards smooth braking. One way to get a better score is to leave enough room between you and the car in front so you don't have to apply hard braking.
Handling the phone while in the car may impact your score too. Best practice is to secure your phone and concentrate on safe driving.
Your score is valid for 6 months’, so we will always use the last 6 months' of your driving data. If we haven’t got 6 months’ worth of data, we will use the data from your initial app usage. This makes sure your driving score is always up to date and gives you the chance to adjust your driving. Visit the 'Score Breakdown' page for more information.
How often do you re-calculate my score?
We re-calculate your score after each journey and at the end of each day to make sure it's always up to date.
How can I improve my score?
To improve your score, you need to drive safely and practice good driving behaviours. For example: Ensuring you remain within the designated speed limits will help your score. Reviewing your journeys will help you identify common practice and assist you to understand how you can improve your driving behaviours. At times we will also provide you hints and tips in your newsfeed to help.
What are the Badges?
Badges are a fun additional feature we have built into the app based on achieving certain driving criteria. Be the first to earn them all and share it on Facebook to brag to your family and friends!
What is the Leaderboard?
Leaderboards help you understand how you fare against others. You are able to see where you rank amongst all app users and what percentile that puts you in. We have also included a private Leaderboard where you can add in friends and families to compete for that number 1 spot!
What is GPS and how does it work?
GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS is used for navigation. Our app uses the built-in GPS in your smartphone to track movement of your vehicle through location and time. To do this successfully the phone needs clear line of sight of GPS satellites in the sky. Sometimes your GPS signal is impacted by your network coverage and your location (whether you are in country or metro areas)
How do I switch Autostart on/off?
Switching off Autostart will mean you’ll need to remember to record each journey by pressing “Start Journey”. To do this go to Settings from the main menu.
Why has the app not recorded any of my journeys?
There are a few reasons why the app may fail to record a journey.
- As the app relies on GPS to track your driving it is important the phone is in a clear line of sight of overhead satellites, for best results, this can be achieved by utilising a phone cradle or simply leaving it safely secured in a position where it's not obstructed by anything in your car.
- The app also requires a certain amount of valid driving time before a journey can be analysed. As a rule of thumb the journey will need to exceed at least 1 minute in total to be validated.
- Where a GPS signal may have been weak or patchy, this could cause a journey to be dismissed as there was not enough information to effectively analyse it. If your journey fails to record the app will aim to let you know why.
- The app may ignore a journey where you have recorded a journey and then used public transport immediately after. This is because the time in between your journey finishing and your public transport journey may not be long enough for the app to stop recording and will record it as one journey. To overcome this manually end your journey before using public transport. This also refers to journeys commencing with public transport and ended in a car journey.
What happens if the app says I was speeding and I know I wasn't?
We keep our speed limit database as up to date as possible but we understand speed zones change from time to time. We try and keep on top of this as much as possible so if you notice an incorrect speed limit please let us know.
How to report a speed zone error - iPhone
Click the speeding pin to bring up the details. Click the 'i". This will display a pop up where you can submit the correct speed zone. Click the send button. This will send an email to us to have this verified.
How to report a speed zone error - Android
Click the speeding pin to bring up the details. Click the 'report incorrect speed' button on the top right of the map. This will display a pop up where you can submit the correct speed zone. Click the send button. This will send an email to us to have this verified.
How do I remove a journey where I was NOT the driver?
We use complex algorithms derived from extensive experience in this area to correctly identify if you were the driver or not, and in most cases we think we'll get it right. If you believe that it's not happening you can turn Autostart off and manually record your journeys.
How do I link my policy?
Will the app drain my battery?
The app will use more battery than if your phone is on standby. This is because it uses your phone’s GPS receiver. We recommend the use of an in-car charger if you are going on a long journey or need to retain battery life. Check out your Location Service defaults that are in your phone settings for other programs that are impacting battery life.
We also have a number of battery saving features that can be activated. To check these out visit the 'Settings' page from the menu.
How much mobile data will the app use?
Not very much, however this depends on how much driving you do and how much you use the in-app features. You can reduce your mobile data usage by selecting 'Wi-Fi only upload' in the 'Settings' menu. This uploads your journey records when you're next connected to Wi-Fi rather than sending the data over your mobile providers data network.
