Hospitality insurance: A quick guide
Hospitality is an exciting industry, but with constant exposure to the public it carries specific risks. Is your business covered?
Many people dream of opening a restaurant, cafe or takeaway chain and then growing it into the next big thing. But no matter how large or small your hospitality business is, you need the right insurance to ensure your business can survive if things go wrong.
There is a range of cover options you may wish to consider for your hospitality business. Here's a quick guide:
Public liability insurance. This important cover protects you if a customer is injured, or their property is damaged, in your place of business.
Product liability insurance. This protects you against claims made by customers that your product has caused them injury or damage to their property.
Property insurance. It’s important for every business to be covered for events such as fire – even more so in hospitality businesses where you may be using hot equipment, such as deep-fryers and gas stoves. You should also ensure your policy adequately covers you for damage from natural events such as bushfires, floods and storms, particularly if you’re in a risk-prone area.
Theft insurance. There are three main types of theft insurance:
(a) Theft – covers the loss of your contents and stock from theft, attempted theft, armed hold-up or an actual or threatened assault.
(b) Money – covers the loss of or damage to your business’ money from a wide variety of sources, including theft, armed hold-up and fire, either on your premises or in transit.
(c) Employee dishonesty – covers the theft of your property or money by any one of your employees either acting alone or in collusion with others.
Glass. Accidents happen, and this popular cover protects you from the cost. Glass doors, counters and fittings are particularly prone to damage, both accidentally by staff or customers and due to malicious damage, often outside of business hours
