AAMI Driver Rewards FAQs

The app collects and analyses your driving data, then provides an overall driving score out of 100 based on a series of criteria. For each of the criteria below, a specific sub score is also provided.

• Phone Distraction: Using the phone in your hand while the vehicle is in motion.
• Hard Braking: A sudden reduction in speed.
• Speeding: Driving over a safe speed for a given road.
• Hard Acceleration: A sudden increase in speed.
• Cornering: Turning or swerving harshly.

There are three main reasons that your score may decrease.

• Change Over Time: The app calculates your score based on your trips over the last two weeks. This means that your scores may change each day as trips older than two weeks are removed from the score calculation, including overall score, scored distance, and the number of scored trips.
• Change in Risky Events: The score is based on driving performance. If your trips within a given two-week period have more risky events than earlier periods, your score will be lower as a result.
• Change in Driving Distance: The score is also based on risk per distance driven, so that if your risk events between two periods are similar, but you drive fewer kilometres in the second period, your score may go down.

Number Score

Your overall score, out of 100, is presented on the home screen. This is the key measurement of your driving performance, based on data from your trips over the past two weeks. The app compares your performance to the typical driver population, both within Australia and internationally, for each sub score. Sub scores are for behaviour categories, like hard braking or speeding, and those sub scores are weighed together to produce an overall score.

Star Rating

The star ratings are granted for each individual trip and can be viewed on the Trips screen. They provide an idea of what happened on each trip. For a given trip, you can lose stars for any risky events that occur, such as phone use, hard braking, speeding, hard acceleration, and hard cornering.

The app identifies a speeding event when the user is driving above the "safe speed." This is based on a threshold over the posted speed limit for the relevant road.

If you notice the speed limit for the relevant road is incorrect in the app, please navigate to the specific event flagged on your trip, tap on the information icon and then tap on ‘Submit Feedback’ to let us know.

Over time, the app learns your driving behaviours and common routes, allowing it to determine whether you were a driver or a passenger for a given trip. To help the app with this process, we recommend that you review and update your trip classifications for your first ten or fifteen trips, so the app learns whether you are a driver or passenger, or in another mode of transport.

To classify your status, navigate to the Trips screen, tap on a given trip, then tap the Driver icon in the upper right corner. You will be able to choose from a series of options. Your scores should be recalculated within a short period.

AAMI Driver Rewards uses the phone's battery to run. It has a very low effect on the battery when you’re not driving. When you are driving, the typical battery drain is only a few percent per hour. This amount varies based on the smartphone’s model and age.

To check the app's battery usage:

• iPhone
  • Go to: Settings > Battery > Scroll to find the app
• Android
  • Go to the app’s App Info page > Scroll through the options to find battery usage

Note that each manufacturer may modify the interface, so these steps might vary.

If you’ve enabled all required permissions (location, motion and Bluetooth permissions) AAMI Driver Rewards should automatically run in the background. This means you don’t need to open the app or have it displayed on your phone’s main screen for it to record trips. If your app is not recording trips automatically, check the following reasons:

• The app won’t record if the phone is turned off.
• The app won’t record if the phone battery is very low or Power Save/Low Power modes are on.
• The app won’t record if Location is disabled.
• The app may not record if the phone is experiencing sensor issues, such as Location, accelerometer, or gyroscope not working properly.
• The app may not record if the phone is running multiple resource-intensive apps and the app does not have the necessary resources to perform.

If the app mistakenly flags a phone use event (e.g. where a passenger uses your phone) it is possible to reclassify that trip.

To reclassify your status:

• navigate to the Trips screen
• tap on a given trip, and
• tap the Driver icon in the upper right corner. You will be able to choose ‘Passenger used phone’ – this will recalculate your scores within a short period.

If you have feedback on a specific event flagged on your recorded trip, please navigate to the specific event flagged on your trip, tap on the information icon and then tap on ‘Submit Feedback’ to let us know.

The app does not know the circumstances of a specific hard braking event - it only measures how hard you brake, and for how long. Your overall score considers how many hard braking events you record in two week a period, so occasional hard braking in unavoidable circumstances won’t substantially impact your score. You may, though, lose stars for an individual trip, because the stars only provide a measure of what happened on that trip.

Make sure you unrestrict the AAMI App from battery optimisation so we can automatically track your trips and check in weekly to see your driver score.

On the ‘Driver’ screen there will be an alert for you to ‘un-restrict battery usage’ if the AAMI App has been set up to ‘Restricted’ or ‘Optimised’ in your phone setting. This alert will prompt you to the right spot in your phone settings to set it to ‘Unrestricted’.

If you still think your operating system may be restricting the AAMI App, here is some guidance on how to check and turn off battery optimisation in your phone settings: 

Turn Off Battery Optimisation

1. Open your phone's Settings app and select Apps & Notifications.
2. On the Apps & Notifications screen, select Advanced and then select Special App Access.
3. On the Special App Access screen, select Battery Optimisation.
4. Check that the AAMI App is listed as Not Optimised.
   1. If the app is not set to Not Optimised, tap on Not Optimised and then tap All Apps.
   2. Search ‘AAMI App’, select the app, and tap Don't Optimise.

Even if there is no Wi-Fi or cell data connection available, your trip will still record as long as location services is enabled.

If the device is offline when a trip is captured, the trip will be uploaded when the network becomes available.

Note: If your trip is delayed in uploading, you might miss the entry cut off for the prize draw.

You can access AAMI Driver Rewards via the AAMI App. Just look for “Driver” at the bottom of the screen and we’ll take you through the necessary steps. 

Yep! Just fire up the app and click the “more info” icon in the right-hand corner of the AAMI Driver Rewards home screen or click into your AAMI App Profile. There you’ll find info on how to opt out. FYI, doing so will mean your trips will no longer be tracked and you won’t be eligible for incentives or special offers that might otherwise apply for using AAMI Driver Rewards.

For AAMI Driver Rewards to function properly and work seamlessly in the background as you drive, you will be required to enable location, motion and Bluetooth services that are appropriate for your device. This will provide the following:

• Automatic trip detection so you don’t have to remember to turn on trip tracking every time you drive.
• A more accurate measure of the beginning and end of your trip.
• More accurate classification of the mode of transport you are using.

No, location is tracked only under specific conditions.

AAMI Driver Rewards begins tracking location information once your smartphone detects a change from your motion and fitness activity settings, to determine whether a trip is in progress. Once it confirms a trip has begun, your location is recorded for the duration of the drive.

Yes, AAMI Driver Rewards uses a small amount of mobile data to process and score your trip results. The app uploads about 400-500 kilobytes of data per hour of driving.

Internet access is required to process and score any new trips and will be done once your phone has an active connection. An active internet connection is not required to record trip data or view the results of prior trips.

AAMI Driver Rewards records data to measure your driving during a trip and identify risky driving events. AAMI Driver Rewards collects the following:

• Location data, including from GPS when available.
• Accelerometer data.
• Gyroscope data, if available.
• Magnetometer data.
• Barometer data, if available.
• Time.
• Your interaction with the phone while you're driving; for example, whether the phone is in motion or not)
  • It’s important to note that the app does not record information about which apps are in use or the content of any messages or calls.
• Smartphone settings and status.
• Your interactions and engagement with the app's screens and information.

To be eligible to access AAMI Driver Rewards offers you need to hold:

• an active eligible AAMI personal insurance policy linked in the AAMI App, and
• a driving score of 85 or above – checked on the 1st day of each month.

Eligible policies include AAMI Car Insurance, Home and/or Content Insurance, Strata Insurance, Landlord Insurance, Motorcycle Insurance, Caravan Insurance, ACT Motor Accident Injuries Insurance and NSW Compulsory Third Party Insurance. Unfortunately, AAMI QLD and SA Compulsory Third Party Insurance, Business/Commercial Insurance, Health Insurance, Life & Income Insurance and Pet Insurance customers are not eligible to access the offers.

Once you are eligible to access offers, here’s what you need to do:

To check the app's battery usage:

1. Activate the offer in the AAMI App (link to AAMI App webpage) via the ‘Rewards tab’.
2. Have an eligible Australian Mastercard or Visa card linked to your account. It can take up to 24 hours to be able to activate offers after linking your card for the first time.
3. Once the offer’s activated, make an eligible purchase from the participating retailer using your linked card during the offer period.

Generally, within 14 business days. This can vary based on retailer policies. Successful cashback will be shown in your linked card’s bank account as ‘AAMI Driver Rewards.

When you activate your first offer, you’ll also be asked to link your eligible Mastercard or Visa card.

Alternatively you can link your card via the ‘My cashback’ screen in the AAMI App.

Tap the ‘Cards’ symbol in the top right corner. Tap ‘Proceed with linking’ and enter your card details or scan your card. You can also tap on the link ‘Link your card’ found on the ‘Prepare your card in advance’ banner as displayed on the Rewards home screen. This banner will only appear when you are linking your card for the first time.

After linking your card for the first time, it can take up to 24 hours to be able to activate offers.

If you need to change your linked card, you can do this via the ‘Cards’ screen within the AAMI App (link to AAMI App webpage).

This will change from month to month. You can view the retailer offers available each month via the ‘Rewards’ tab in the AAMI App.

We use three values to calculate estimated fuel saving:

• Last year’s national average ULP and diesel costs from Australia Institute of Petroleum
• Estimated fuel efficiency of the vehicle type
• Your estimated fuel efficiency based on your driving behaviours.

A negative fuel saving value indicates higher fuel costs based on your driving compared to the expected costs for the vehicle type's efficiency. 

Calculation example:

1. Your fuel efficiency / vehicle type fuel efficiency = Rate difference in fuel efficiencies 
   e.g. 5L ÷ 6L = 0.8333 (rate difference) 
2. Your estimated fuel used is multiplied by the average fuel price to calculate the estimated cost for the vehicle type
   e.g. 50L x $2.01 = $100.5 (Estimated fuel cost for vehicle type) 
3. Estimated fuel cost for vehicle type x rate difference in fuel efficiencies = Your estimated fuel cost
   e.g. $100.5 x 0.8333 = $83.75 (your estimated fuel cost) 
4. Estimated fuel cost for vehicle type - your estimated fuel cost = Fuel saving
   e.g. $100.5 - $83.75 = $16.75 (fuel saving) 

Service your vehicle regularly
Keep your vehicle well-tuned to improve its fuel efficiency, reduce running costs and extend its life.

Keep your tires properly inflated
Under-inflated tires have a higher rolling resistance on the road, causing higher fuel consumption.

Travel light when possible
The more a vehicle carries, the more fuel it uses. Minimise the cargo your vehicle carries to reduce your fuel consumption.

Reduce fuel wasted in idling
By switching the engine off, even for a short while, you will save more fuel than is lost from the burst of fuel needed to restart the engine.

Service your vehicle regularly
Keep your vehicle well-tuned to improve its fuel efficiency, reduce its CO2 emissions and running costs and extend its life.

Keep your tyres properly inflated
Under-inflated tyres have a higher rolling resistance on the road, causing higher fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Travel light when possible
The more a vehicle carries, the more fuel it uses, leading to higher CO2 emissions. Minimise the cargo your vehicle carries to reduce your fuel consumption. 

Reduce fuel wasted in idling
By switching the engine off, even for a short while, you will save more fuel and reduce more CO2 emissions than is lost from the burst of fuel needed to restart the engine.

If your driving score is high but your CO2 efficiency meter rating is lower than expected, consider your driving environment. Do you mostly drive in the city? Urban driving, with frequent stops and traffic, tends to lower your CO2 efficiency. Eco Drive calculates your CO2 efficiency rating using a mix of city and highway driving.

Even with safe driving, factors like frequent stops, steep roads, and traffic congestion can impact CO2 efficiency—some of which may be outside your control. However, maintaining safe and efficient driving habits will help improve your CO2 efficiency over time.
