Should you make a claim for damaged glass?
If glass in your home — such as windows, shower screens and skylights — is broken, it can be tricky to decide whether you should claim. After all, as with many types of home insurance claims, you’ll probably have to pay an excess to get it repaired or replaced. And if that excess amount is more than you estimate it would cost to repair independently, you might wind up feeling like claiming isn’t worth it.
But even if you decide to get a quote or two from a glazier to help you decide, you’ll be sitting there with broken glass, potentially leaving your house colder and a little more dangerous.
It’d be great if there was a way to get fixed glass repaired without worrying about an excess, right?
How do I avoid paying an excess for glass damage?
With Excess-Free Glass cover, you can fix or replace broken glass in fixtures like mirrors and windows in your home. The cover is optional, and you pay a slightly higher premium, but it means there will be no excess payable if and when you make a claim.
What counts as glass?
AAMI’s optional Excess-free Glass cover provides cover for:
- shower screens, and
- mirrors fixed to your home.
What’s included in Excess-Free Glass cover?
There’s a bit more to it than simply replacing your glass, that’s for sure. Here’s what you can expect with AAMI’s Excess-Free Glass cover:
- Replacement of accidentally broken fixed glass in windows, doors, skylights, shower screens and fixed mirrors which are part of your home building.
- Repair or replacement of frames in windows, doors and shower screens if necessary, to enable the glass to be replaced
- No excess to pay when your claim is only for the broken fixed glass
- Access to trusted glass repairers
Just remember: Excess-Free Glass cover is for fixed glass only – so it has to be a part of your home building (that means no cover for glass objects like vases, or glass in things like TV or computer screens). Refer to the PDS for more information.
How do you know if I have Excess-Free Glass cover?
Your Certificate of Insurance will show whether you have this Optional Cover or not.
What if you have damage to your roof and windows owing to a recent storm?
You will need to lodge a claim for the storm damage in this case and you may be covered for the roof and windows under the one claim. Of course, you will need to pay any excess in this case.
