Driving tips
Safer roads aren’t just good for you — they’re good for our whole community. And there are a few things we can all keep in mind behind the wheel to help keep that community safer.
Acceleration
Accelerating smoothly means you're driving more safely, helping the planet, and easing the pressure on your wallet.
Accelerating a little too harshly — for example, when taking off at the lights or running up to a highway — can be dangerous, and really eat up your petrol.
Braking
Stay at least three seconds behind the vehicle in front of you. That should give you enough time to brake gradually and safely if anything happens.
If you’re driving while distracted, or tailgating, you can wind up quickly slamming on the brakes — which can lead to a collision.
Speeding
If you’re on an uninterrupted stretch of road, like a highway, cruise control can be a great help.
Leave plenty of journey time — many drivers don’t even notice their speed gradually creeping up when they’re in a rush. Stay safe and watch the speed limit.
Cornering
Stay smooth and precise when you hit those corners. Accelerate gradually, and only when the turn is complete.
We’ve all rushed a corner or two in our time, especially when we’re in a hurry or trying to squeeze in a turn before the lights change. Give yourself time to react quickly and corner safely.
Phone use
If you don’t have a phone mount, try get into the habit of not touching your phone by keeping it in the glove box or on the backseat, or switching it to “do not disturb”.
Even a moment’s distraction can be dangerous for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
Crash Detection
Crash detection is a feature of AAMI Driver Rewards within the AAMI App that can detect when you’ve been in a possible accident and help you capture key details at the scene.
How it works
You must have permissions enabled for the AAMI App and be opted in. Then:
- If we detect a possible crash via AAMI Driver Rewards, we will send you a push notification.
- If you confirm you’ve been in an accident, we’ll guide you through what information you may want to capture at the scene.
- We’ll suggest you complete a vehicle safety check with some common things to look out for on your vehicle after an accident.
- If you hold a Comprehensive Car Insurance policy with AAMI, then once you’re ready you can use the created crash summary to start a claim via the AAMI App.
How to view detected crashes
- Download the AAMI App and set up AAMI Driver Rewards.
- Select the ‘Driver’ tab.
- Tap the ‘Crash detection’ box to view your confirmed and detected crashes (if you’re opted in).
Only customers with an AAMI Comprehensive Car policy can use a crash summary to start a claim with prefilled information through the AAMI App.
How to opt in to Crash detection
- Download the AAMI App and set up AAMI Driver Rewards.
- Ensure your motion and location settings are turned on.
- If you’re an eligible AAMI policy holder, you‘ll be automatically opted in when you use AAMI Driver Rewards. You can opt out anytime via the settings menu in the AAMI App.
- Otherwise, you can choose to opt in via the AAMI App’s settings menu whenever you want.
- That’s it! Possible crashes will then be automatically detected and stored in the AAMI App.
