Broadsheet in partnership with AAMI Business Insurance caught up with Greenspace co-owner, Nina Fitzpatrick, to talk about her experience as a small business owner. In this Q&A, Fitzpatrick shares how her plant hiring business came to be, the most exciting moments, and her advice for other aspiring business owners.
1. Tell us about Greenspace.
We launched Greenspace Melbourne in 2016 and our mission is to bring greenery and life into every space. We specialise in indoor plant hire and retail sales with a focus on events, hospitality, office and property styling. As well as plant hire, our team is now doing a lot more floral work creating larger installations like hanging centerpieces and large floral screens. There may also be an events space full of lush tropical greenery coming soon!
2. How did you develop the idea for your business?
We started doing pop up plant sales in St Kilda. One day a customer asked if we could do hire and things spiralled from there. Every week we have requests for something we may not have done before and we love the challenge, it forces us to constantly evolve and develop the business.
3. What is the most fulfilling thing about being a business owner?
There’s a huge sense of pride and self-fulfillment that comes when you overcome a challenge. At the end of the day its all about keeping our clients happy and when we can pull that last minute rabbit out of the hat to keep things on track it feels great.
4. Do you have any tips for aspiring business owners?
Keep pushing in those moments of doubt, surround yourself with positive people who believe in what you are trying to achieve and don’t be afraid to build your business in stages.
5. How do you juggle your work life balance?
We came from the hospitality industry so this is a dream. Owning our own business gives us so much flexibility, there are still plenty of weekends, 16-hour days and non stop weeks but when we really need to take time for those important things in life we can.
6. What has been the biggest high for you with Greenspace?
It sounds so simple but for us it was buying our first van. Neither of us had ever bought a new car before and to generate enough revenue from the business to buy ourselves a brand new purpose built vehicle was such a great moment. It also happened to make life so much easier as in the early stages of the business we were renting a little Hiace.
