All the skills. Just one day.
Did you know that almost 86% of drivers aged 18-24 say they’ve experienced distracted driving in the past year? And 46% admit to sending or reading a text message while driving in the past year.
Our research also shows that fewer than half of drivers in Australia believe current licensing requirements mean young drivers get adequate driver training. 72% of young drivers themselves believe it should be compulsory to do a safe driving course.
That’s where we can help. Our one-day AAMI Skilled Drivers Course is designed to arm young drivers with safe driving techniques and a better understanding of what it takes to be safe on the road.
Who can do the course?
The course is open to P-Plate or fully licensed drivers under the age of 25, and it's free if either you, your parent or your grandparent has a Comprehensive Car Insurance policy with us.
While you can’t do the course just yet, get ahead of the queue and register now. We’ll contact you with all the information you need when you're ready to get your licence. Or, if you’d like to register your child or grandchild, you can do so and we’ll contact you and the driver when they’re ready.
Yes, you can still do the course, at a cost of $190 (inc. GST), as long as you have either a P-Plate or full driving licence.
Bear in mind that the course is designed to address common issues for young drivers and so the course content focuses on drivers under 25.
If you’re not an AAMI Comprehensive Car Insurance customer but under 25, you can still do the course at a cost of $190 (inc. GST).
And if you switch to AAMI after completing the course, you’ll be eligible for 10% discount on our Comprehensive Car Insurance until you turn 25.

Who it's conducted by
The courses are conducted by AAMI Skilled Drivers Trainers who are trained by the Driver Education Centre of Australia. The trainers hold all necessary qualifications relevant for the state in which the course is conducted.
Safety is our first priority
All courses are conducted in a controlled environment, under strict supervision and by experienced trainers. A trainer is in the car during all practical exercises.
Bring your own car
We recommend you bring the car you usually drive. It doesn’t have to be the car insured by AAMI, as long as it is registered. If you’re doing the course with people you know, up to 3 of you can share the same car.
Parents / moral support
One parent (or other relative or friend) can attend with you but they’re not allowed in the car while you’re doing the practical exercises.
The trainer needs proof on the day that you have a current drivers licence. If you can’t find your licence, you can bring a receipt for the licence payment or a copy of the licence.
Come rain or shine, the AAMI Skilled Drivers Course will go ahead.
How the 10% Discount works
Once you complete the AAMI Skilled Drivers Course, the related Comprehensive Car Insurance policyholder – whether it be you, your parent or grandparent - gets a 10% discount on their premium.
The discount is applied for as long as the Skilled Driver is under 25 and remains listed on the policy.
This is just a summary. For full details check the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement). It's dry, we know, but it's essential reading.
If I drive my parent’s car and I’m on my parent’s Comprehensive Car Insurance policy as a driver, do they get the 10% discount?
Yes, as long as you’re listed as a driver on their policy.
If you and your parents have separate policies, then only the Skilled Driver participant (you) will be eligible for the 10% discount.
If my parents pay for my insurance, can I still get the 10% discount for the course?
Yes, as long as the policy is under your (the Skilled Driver participant’s) name, it doesn’t matter who pays the premium.
What if I've already paid my insurance this year?
You’ll receive the 10% discount on the unexpired portion of your rated premium for the remaining period of insurance, as a refund. In subsequent years, the discount will be automatically recognised when you renew, so long as the eligible Skilled Driver participant is still under 25 years of age.

What AAMI Safe Drivers are saying
The course was great. It has stuck in my head how important it is to keep a safe following distance when driving. The course was super practical and helpful.– Lachlan C. (Course Participant, June 2015)
I just want to say thank you for enabling me to participate in The Skilled Drivers Course. Although I have had my license for several decades, I found the course to be invaluable. The trainers putting us through the pace were thorough and professional, providing us with a greater degree of understanding and visual concepts of possible dangerous scenarios we could face on the roads any given day.
Making our roads safer
That's why we put safety at the centre of everything we do.
