Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance — known as a Green Slip in NSW — is a policy that can help cover costs related to injuries caused in a motor vehicle accidents. These costs can include things like medical expenses and coverage for lost income. You have to have a CTP policy in place before you can successfully register your car.

Compulsory Third Party Insurance
Frequently asked questions
Yes. In NSW, Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTP) is also known as ‘Green Slip’.
Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Personal Injury insurance is compulsory when registering a motor vehicle in NSW. You are not covered for CTP if your car is not registered. You may be personally liable for any injuries you cause in a motor vehicle accident if it is driven whilst not registered and without CTP cover.
As long as your trailer and/or caravan is in a roadworthy condition, it will be covered by the CTP or MAI Insurance policy of the vehicle towing it.
No, there’s no need to list a learner on your CTP policy. The only exceptions are if the vehicle is used for professional driving instruction purposes, it’s registered in the learner’s name, or it’s the vehicle they will drive once they get their licence.
If you have a light vehicle (vehicles with GVM less than 4.5 tonnes), you can choose between a 6 or 12 month term. Provided you pay for both the CTP Green Slip and registration within 21 days of the due date, you can choose a 6 month term for the renewal of your CTP Green Slip.
If you’re moving to NSW, you’ll need to purchase a CTP Green Slip and obtain an eSafety check prior to registering your vehicle with Service NSW. Until you register your car in NSW, it will be considered unregistered, even if you still have registration left over from where you were previously living. Visit Service NSW for further details.
If you’re moving away from NSW, you’ll need to refer to your new state or territory’s requirements and timeframes for transferring your vehicle registration. If you’re moving to SA or the ACT, you’ll have the opportunity to choose AAMI as your new SA Compulsory Third Party (CTP) or ACT Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) insurer. Visit our SA CTP Insurance or ACT MAI Insurance pages to learn more.
There are a number of reasons why your payment may not have gone through, but don’t stress. Give us a call on 13 22 44 (Monday-Friday 8am-6pm, Saturday 8am-4pm), and we’ll get to the bottom of it for you.
You can receive your CTP policy documents via email and we may send you reminders via sms. You can consent to receiving your CTP policy documents electronically when setting up your CTP insurance online or when you contact to set up or renew your CTP policy. All you need to provide is a regularly used email address and mobile phone number. If you consent to receiving your CTP policy documents electronically you will not receive policy documents and communications via post.

What has changed and why?
The NSW Government has introduced a new CTP Green Slip scheme to better support people injured on NSW roads. Shifting from a focus on lump-sum payouts to one that directs its energy towards rehabilitation of injured people means we can offer a more affordable and efficient CTP scheme to customers.
The new scheme is focused on early support and recovery. For the first time, injured people can receive weekly income payments if they need time off work.
What does this mean for you?
We’re changing the way we price NSW CTP insurance, while offering cover regardless of who’s at fault after an accident.
From 1 December 2017, changes will be made to our NSW CTP Green Slip product. These changes will:
- reduce the cost of Green Slip premiums,
- reduce the time it takes to resolve a claim,
- increase the proportion of benefits provided to the most seriously injured road users, and
- reduce the opportunities for claims fraud and exaggeration.
