What’s included in home insurance?

By  AAMI

Home insurance covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home after an insured event. The specifics of what’s covered will depend on your policy.

Being uninsured (or underinsured) may lead to unwelcome damage bills. Here are some lesser known things that home insurance can help with.

What’s included in building insurance?

AAMI Building Insurance covers the physical structure of your house in an insured event – like fires, theft, storms, burglaries and so on. It also covers anything permanently attached to your house. Here are some examples of what AAMI Building Insurance covers:

Legal liability

Many people are unaware of the importance of legal liability cover. If a visitor is injured at your home, they can file a legal liability claim against you. It only takes a single accident for you to take a serious financial hit. For example, if a tradie (or anyone else) trips down your staircase and is injured.

AAMI Home Insurance will cover your legal liability for up to $20m for any one incident. It’s included in every home insurance policy, so you can rest easy.

Please read your PDS for conditions, limits and exclusions.

Windows and glass sliding doors

In the case of an insured event, AAMI Building Insurance covers windows, glass sliding doors and other types of glass attached to your home (including window tint if fitted). This also includes skylights, shower screens, and mirrors fixed to your home and toilets. You’ll just need to pay an excess when you make a claim.

If you add Excess-Free Glass cover to your Home Insurance policy for an added premium, you won’t need to pay an excess.

Cabinetry

Building Insurance covers permanent fixtures like cabinets, pantries, built-in wardrobes, and more.

Pools and spas

Fixed pools and spas are also covered under Building Insurance.

If you also want coverage for your inflatable pools and portable spas, you’ll need to add Contents Insurance to your policy – as those items are classified as contents.

Am I covered against leaks?

Yes! AAMI Building Insurance covers damage caused by escape of liquid. This applies to a drain, sewage system, or fixed pipe (not forming part of a shower floor, base or shower cubicle wall, and not overflow drains or pipes). That’s why our coverage extends to any part of your home.

You’re also covered for leaks from fixed tanks, swimming pools, spas, refrigerators, freezers, or washing machines.

Garages, carports, outbuildings

We cover your garages, carports, and outbuildings whether you use the spaces as storage, or even as a workshop for your DIY projects. We also cover structural improvements at your insured address. But please contact us beforehand to ensure you’re properly covered under your policy.

However, there are instances where you won’t be covered – such as outbuildings with their own utility metering that could be seen as a residence.

For the full details, check your PDS.

Decks, pergolas, pagodas, verandas, and balconies

We cover all of these structures at your insured address. Though, it’s important to keep everything well-maintained – we don’t cover wear and tear.

Garden borders and paths

We cover garden borders, sealed pathways, and paved or concreted floors. These are considered part of your building.

Wired ovens

We cover wired ovens and other electrical appliances permanently housed, connected or wired to the building.

But remember – as a rule, we don’t cover wear and tear. So, it’s important to take care of what you own.

Gas appliances

We also cover gas appliances that are permanently plumbed to your home’s gas supply. This includes stoves, gas ovens and other appliances.

Solar panels

We consider solar panels as part of your home if they’re attached to the building. So, they’re covered if they’re damaged by hail, a bad storm, or any other insured event.

Storage tanks

We cover fixed water and sewer storage and treatment tanks that are permanently plumbed to your home.

Boat jetties

Boat jetties, pontoons, mooring poles, and their attachments and accessories are covered – if they’re located within the boundaries of the insured address.

And more!

There are lots more things covered by AAMI Building Insurance. For the full list, read your PDS.

What’s not covered

Like we mentioned before, we do not cover wear and tear or deterioration. We also don’t cover some losses where building extensions, alterations or renos are incomplete. Thinking of renovating? Contact us to let us know, to play it safe.

Food and medication spoilage

Food is becoming increasingly expensive. Needing a sudden fridge, freezer and pantry restock can really cut into your savings – especially when you need to restock medications on top of that.

That’s why, AAMI covers food and medication spoilage that occurs due to a fridge malfunction – up to a limit. We also cover spoilage that occurs in any other insured event. For example, electrical breakdowns, a sudden escape of refrigerant fumes, a public electricity supply failure, and more.

Read your PDS for the full info on coverage and limits.

Plants

You’re in luck if you’re a green thumb! AAMI Home and Contents Insurance covers pot plants and their pots. We don’t cover trees, shrubs, hedges, and plants in the ground.

Clothing

We cover your clothes and accessories too. So, we have your back in the case of a flood, fire or home burglary.

Want to cover your clothes for accidental damage? Add on our optional Accidental Damage cover . It’ll come in handy if you ever spill some red wine on your carpet or accidentally drop your laptop at home.
