Make your business more flood-ready with help from VICSES

When floods happen, the impact on businesses can be devastating.

  • Fixtures, fittings, equipment and inventory can be damaged beyond repair.

  • Critical documents and data can be lost.

  • Cleaning, drying and restoring premises can take weeks

  • For businesses like restaurants and retailers, it can take even longer for customers to return.

Whatever your business, learn about steps you can take to help make your business ready for flooding in your area.

VICSES can help keep your business from going under

The Victoria State Emergency Service’s (VICSES) new online Business Flood Plan information provides a range of tips, guides, checklists and more to help you assess your business’ flood risk and plan accordingly.

Since 2002, AAMI has contributed more than $8 million to help VICSES provide on-the-ground support during emergencies. Learn more.

Jo Kegg, Emergency Management Planning and Risk Officer at VICSES, emphasises the importance of flood planning. “Businesses need to find out what the flood risk is in their area,” says Jo. “They can speak to their local VICSES unit, Catchment Management Authority and local council. And they should tap into local knowledge by talking to business owners and other members of their communities.

“Once you understand your flood risk, ask yourself how you’re protecting your people, business and property. Early preparation will help lower the risk of flooding to your business and also help you to recover more quickly after a flood event.”

In Castlemaine, Victoria, business owner Phil McConachy was able to reduce his business’ risk by working with VICSES and other organisations to plan and prepare. He describes how he was able to do this in the video below.

From flood plan templates to sandbagging tips, The Victoria State Emergency Service’s new online Business Flood Plan information gives you resources to kickstart your business’ flood planning.

Part of your planning should be to check your insurance protection. AAMI offers customisable Business Insurance packages. Flood is not automatically covered, but may be offered as an option, at an additional premium.
