Happy Chinese New Year from AAMI

It’s the Year of the Rooster — time to get (c)lucky! Find out what this auspicious sign means for the year ahead.

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year and the Spring Festival, is a time of great celebration in China and for people all over the world. Dating back some 3,800 years, each Chinese New Year is characterised by a different animal from the zodiac. This year it’s the Year of the Rooster. (Roosters are those who are born in 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005 and 2017.)

This year, we’re celebrating love and family. For Dragons, Sheep and every other animal in between, the year will bring good luck to those who are loyal, loving, committed to their goals, hard working and dedicated to family values.

Where did this festival originate? Why do we let off fireworks and paint the town red? During the Shang Dynasty, people used to decorate their houses red and set of firecrackers in order to fight the monster ‘Nian’. Although the festival has evolved since those early days to encompass many more aspects of Chinese culture, red decorations and fireworks are still synonymous with Chinese New Year celebrations across the globe.
